An artificial reef off the Sussex coast to boost tourism and commerce
Sink One 4 Sussex is the non-profit community group behind the project to source and to sink a warship ship to create an artificial reef off the Sussex coast to the south of Seaford and Newhaven, East Sussex.
What’s it about?
Inspired by a smaller project in Plymouth, where a former Royal Navy frigate, Scylla, was sunk in 2004 to encourage marine life and provide an attraction for divers, the plan is to obtain an ex-Royal Navy vessel, strip the vessel, making it environmentally friendly, then sink it to a depth of 100ft approximately 1 mile off shore close to Buckle Point, in Seaford Bay, East Sussex.
“Our aim is to inspire and educate everyone to engage in learning about and caring for the local marine environment, while boosting local tourism and commerce.”
As well as offering divers a unique new dive site, the reef presents an opportunity to improve environmental awareness and boost marine life.
What does it mean for Sussex?
We believe this will benefit the local community by promoting tourism and regenerating the surrounding towns. A similar project, HMS SCYLLA, currently generates about £1 million pounds a year in extra revenue in the Plymouth and the South West of the UK.
